Breville the Infuser Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine – Brushed Stainless Steel

Breville the Infuser Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine – Brushed Stainless Steel

$589.99

Breville’s Infuser BES840 is a grinder-free 54mm semi-automatic with PID-controlled heating, low-pressure pre-infusion, pressure gauge, volumetric one- and two-cup buttons, hot-water outlet and manual steam wand. It gives owners much of Breville’s espresso control without committing them to a built-in grinder. That separation is both benefit and obligation: the grinder can be chosen or upgraded independently, but it must be espresso-capable. Owners also manage single-wall versus dual-wall baskets, sequential brewing and steaming, water filters, cleaning-tablet cycles, descaling and immediate wand care.

Requires pre-ground coffee or a separate grinder for fresh whole beans.

What Ownership Is Really Like

The grinder is the defining companion purchase

Dual-wall baskets can work with preground coffee, while single-wall baskets expose grind quality directly. An espresso burr grinder unlocks the machine’s control and can be upgraded independently. Budget and counter space should include it from the start.

Low-pressure pre-infusion makes puck preparation more forgiving

The machine wets coffee gently before full extraction. It cannot fix clumps or a tilted tamp. Use a consistent dose, distribute to the edges, tamp level and clear the rim. The gauge then becomes useful evidence rather than a target to chase blindly.

PID improves repeatability

Electronic temperature control stabilizes brewing and the machine allows small temperature adjustments. Use that control after grind and ratio are close. Higher temperature can help lighter coffee; lower can restrain darker roast bitterness.

Volumetric buttons are programmable

One- and two-cup controls stop automatically and can be reset or customized. They measure delivery behavior, not beverage mass. A scale remains valuable because puck resistance and retained water can change what reaches the cup.

Brewing and steaming are sequential

The thermocoil changes from brew to steam temperature, so milk follows espresso rather than occurring simultaneously. The wand offers manual microfoam control and includes an auto-purge behavior that returns the system toward brew temperature, sending water into the drip tray.

The drip tray fills from normal operation

Auto-purge, blank shots and rinses add water even when nothing spills. Empty the tray when its indicator rises and wash away coffee sludge. A full tray can create the appearance of an internal leak.

Water filters are a recurring consumable

The tank accepts Breville filters, which support taste and scale control but need replacement. Filters do not eliminate descaling. Water hardness, usage and prompts determine mineral maintenance, while detergent tablets address coffee oils in a separate cleaning cycle.

Routine cleaning is layered

Rinse basket and portafilter after use, flush the group, wipe the shower screen, empty the tray and wipe and purge the steam wand immediately. Clean the blocked tip with the supplied tool. Follow prompts for the cleaning cycle and descale procedure.

The separate design improves long-term flexibility

Unlike a Barista Express, a grinder failure cannot sideline the brewer and a grinder upgrade does not replace the machine. The tradeoff is two appliances and more cable and grounds management.

Who will enjoy it

The Infuser fits someone who wants Breville guidance and control while choosing a separate grinder. It is less suitable for automatic milk, simultaneous service or buyers who want every function in one chassis.

Our Editorial Take

The Infuser remains a thoughtful middle ground: enough temperature, pressure and programming feedback to teach espresso, without locking the owner into an integrated grinder. Its real cost includes that grinder, filters and cleaning supplies, and its real reward comes from deliberate puck and milk technique.
