What Ownership Is Really Like
The pressure gauge is feedback, not a score
Neretva identifies an approximate espresso zone, but the gauge reads resistance created by coffee, dose and basket. A needle in range does not guarantee good flavor, and a needle outside it is not corrected by tamping as hard as possible. Taste, beverage weight and flow time should be considered together.
Pressurized baskets lower the starting barrier
The supplied single and double filters can create resistance even when the grind is less precise, making preground coffee more workable. That convenience can mask uneven preparation and limits how directly the owner controls flow. Buyers who later add a grinder may want compatible non-pressurized baskets, subject to fit.
Published doses are useful baselines
The manual suggests roughly 13–14 grams for a single and about 17 grams for a double. Actual capacity varies with bean density and grind. Avoid overfilling: coffee should not be crushed against the shower screen, and a clean rim is necessary for the gasket to seal.
Pre-infusion and pressure relief improve the handoff
Pre-infusion wets the puck before full pressure. After brewing, automatic pressure release helps make portafilter removal less abrupt. Wait for the cycle to settle before unlocking; removing a pressurized handle immediately can spray wet grounds and accelerate gasket wear.
Programmed buttons still need calibration
Automatic one- and two-cup delivery is convenient for a familiar recipe. If the grind or dose changes, the same water program can produce a different strength and extraction. A small scale reveals whether the cup yield remains appropriate and lets the owner stop a clearly wrong shot.
The 51mm format rewards tidy preparation
A narrower basket creates a deeper puck. Use the supplied funnel to reduce spill, break up clumps and tamp level. The funnel helps cleanliness but should be removed before brewing, and stray grounds on the rim should be brushed away before the portafilter is locked.
Milk drinks are manual from start to finish
The rotating wand provides positioning freedom. Purge water first, introduce air near the surface and then roll the milk to refine texture. The machine does not stop at a target temperature. Wipe and purge the wand immediately so residue cannot bake onto or inside the nozzle.
A 1.8-liter tank is generous but not maintenance-free
Multiple drinks are practical, yet rinse water, steam purges and preheating reduce usable capacity. Replace stale water, rinse the tank daily as directed and make sure it seats fully. Clear access matters around the roughly 15-inch-tall body.
Daily cleaning and descaling solve different problems
Rinse the portafilter and baskets, flush the group, wipe the shower area, empty the tray and clean the wand after use. The manual suggests descaling about every two to three months depending on water. Mineral removal cannot substitute for removing coffee oils and milk residue.
Who will enjoy it
PE3690WH suits a beginner who wants a gauge, guided shot buttons and an accessory bundle while retaining manual milk control. It is less compelling for a buyer who expects a built-in grinder, one-touch drinks or standard commercial-size 58mm accessories.
Our Editorial Take
Neretva gives a first-time owner helpful feedback and a complete set of starting accessories without pretending to automate the craft. The gauge, pre-infusion and pressure release make learning friendlier, but coffee quality still depends on grind and puck preparation, and milk and cleaning remain hands-on.
