Chefman CraftBrew Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine – Stainless Steel

Chefman CraftBrew Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine – Stainless Steel

$99.99

The Chefman CraftBrew is a compact 15-bar semi-automatic with single- and double-shot controls, programmable volume, an extraction timer, a manual steam wand, a 1.5-liter rear tank and a narrow 8.9-inch body. It is aimed at buyers who want a straightforward ground-coffee espresso routine without an integrated grinder. It is easy to understand, but fresh-bean quality still depends on a separate grinder and milk drinks remain hands-on. The machine adds a useful descale alert after roughly 500 uses, while everyday cleaning stays manual.

Requires pre-ground coffee or a separate grinder for fresh whole beans.

What Ownership Is Really Like

The machine is simple; coffee preparation is not automatic

CraftBrew uses ground coffee in single- or double-shot baskets. Owners who buy whole beans need a separate espresso-capable burr grinder, and the grinder will influence results at least as much as the machine. Dose, distribution and tamp determine whether water moves evenly through the puck. The digital timer helps you observe extraction, but it cannot correct an unsuitable grind or uneven puck.

Programmed volumes are useful once the coffee is dialed in. The owner can save a shorter ristretto-style or longer lungo-style output, reducing button watching on later drinks. Changing beans may require revisiting both grind and volume.

A compact footprint has access implications

At approximately 8.9 inches wide, 10.8 inches deep and 11.9 inches high, the machine is friendly to narrow counters. The removable 1.5-liter tank sits at the back, so cabinet clearance and the ability to reach behind the machine matter more than the width alone suggests. A compact body also means a smaller working area around cups and the drip tray than on a full-size prosumer machine.

Milk drinks require a second heating routine

The steam wand is manual: activate froth mode, wait for steam readiness, texture cold milk, stop around 140–150°F, then wipe and purge the wand immediately. This gives more control than an automatic frother, but it adds technique and means brewing and steaming are sequential. A latte is therefore several steps longer than a straight shot.

The manual’s instruction to purge the wand over the drip tray after use is important. Milk residue that dries inside the tip can block steam, turning a quick cleanup omission into troubleshooting later.

What gets cleaned after each use

Chefman directs owners to discard the puck, wash the basket and portafilter, wipe the group area, clean the drip plate and tray, and wipe the housing with nonabrasive materials. If the machine has been unused for a week or more, the manual recommends repriming with a water-only cycle. None of this is difficult, but it distinguishes ownership from a capsule machine where the spent dose is enclosed.

The descale alert is helpful, not self-cleaning

After about 500 uses, “dSC” appears. The machine continues operating, but repeatedly postponing descaling can shorten its life. The documented process runs commercial descaler through both brew head and steam wand, then requires two fresh-water flush sequences. The reminder solves the problem of remembering; the owner still supplies the descaler, containers and time.

Who will enjoy it

CraftBrew suits a buyer who wants an uncomplicated, compact portafilter machine and is willing to pair it with ground coffee or a separate grinder. It is less appropriate for someone expecting integrated grinding, automatic milk, or commercial-style simultaneous brewing and steaming.

Our Editorial Take

CraftBrew’s ownership proposition is clarity: a small, focused machine that automates shot stopping while leaving coffee preparation and milk texture in the owner’s hands. Its low complexity is an advantage only if the buyer accepts the separate grinder and routine rinsing that real portafilter espresso requires.
