What Ownership Is Really Like
The 3.5-bar label describes a different drink style
Steam pressure pushes water through the grounds at far lower pressure than modern pump espresso. The result can be concentrated and useful under foamed milk, but crema, body and shot control will differ. Buyers seeking café-style dialing should choose a pump machine.
Every batch begins by measuring the water
The carafe markings correspond to the two- or four-cup fill. The boiler is sealed during operation, so do not exceed 240ml and do not open the cap until the appliance has cooled and pressure is released. Back-to-back batches require patience.
Medium grounds and a light tamp matter
The manual warns against fine coffee that can block the path. Fill evenly, wipe the rim and tamp gently. This reverses the instinct learned on pump machines, where owners often grind finer to create resistance.
The glass carafe is part of the system
Coffee is brewed as a small batch into the supplied carafe. Protect it from thermal shock, hand-wash it and confirm replacement availability. A broken proprietary carafe can interrupt ownership more completely than a missing demitasse.
Brewing and steaming share one small heat source
Plan water so enough remains to generate steam, and expect sequential coffee and milk preparation. The wand can make abundant foam, but microfoam finesse is limited by the steam system and small boiler. Wipe and purge immediately.
Pressure safety is an everyday routine
Lock the funnel fully, keep hands away from the cap and wand, turn the knob off and unplug before disassembly. Never add water to a hot pressurized boiler. These are not occasional warnings; they shape every second batch.
Cleaning is simple but cannot be rushed
Allow cooling, discard grounds, wash basket, funnel and carafe by hand, empty the tray and clear milk from the wand. Descale periodically, running solution through both brew and steam paths and then rinsing thoroughly.
Who it fits
BCM2201 fits a budget buyer who wants several small concentrated servings and frothy milk with minimal counter space. It is not the right tool for conventional espresso extraction, fast consecutive batches or owners uncomfortable with a sealed steam boiler.
Our Editorial Take
KEENSTAR’s appeal is low-cost simplicity, provided expectations match the technology. The 3.5-bar boiler produces steam-brewed concentrated coffee; it does not become a café pump machine because the product is called espresso.
